Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction-What Does the Mainstream Media have to do with it?

There are millions of alcohol consumers all over the planet. Of course, not everyone becomes an alcohol abuse addict in the end, but the sad thing is that there are high chances for that to happen.

There are basically two reasons for this – one that alcohol is sold legally to anyone and everyone over a certain age, and the second being the media. There have been countless movies that have glorified alcohol and other kinds of addictions like smoking. Even drug addiction has been shown as being quite acceptable in some movies. We should understand that movies are watched by everyone, and that includes children, who go into the cinema halls with impressionable minds and come out with the ideas that have been bombarded on them via a seventy mm screen. Of course, there are specific and intricate ratings now available, which are more stringent than their predecessors. However, these ratings can only ensure that a child does not see these movies in the cinema hall, but what stops them from watching them on home video? This is where the parents come into the picture.

Parents should closely monitor the behavioral aspects of their children at every point of their life. Any movie that glorifies alcohol should not be viewed by children. Also, parents should take note of the role models and the characters that their children consider as someone that they would like to be when they grow up. Parents should also understand at this stage that consuming alcohol is quite different than alcohol addiction, and a few drinks a week do not constitute an alcoholic. Therefore, it is all up to the parents, as to how they handle their children and the various exposures they get to the media.
