Zero tolerance policies for alcohol and drug use are common in the United States. Federal laws administer zero tolerance against drinking under the age of 21 and using illegal drugs. However, more local rules and regulations are causing bigger problems. Zero tolerance policies are a recent trend in the nation’s school systems, and they are often ridiculously illogical and unfair. Hepatitis C is a disease that most people get infected with due to alcoholism and drug addiction. It attacks the liver and can lead to advanced liver disease if not taken care of. Hepatitis C sometimes becomes a chronic disease because the individual’s body is unable to fight it off. People who have it may not have symptoms for years after they get infected, even though the health of their live is deteriorating. For those who do have symptoms with the disease, they can include nausea, fever, muscle aches, headaches, tiredness, jaundice, sore abdomen, and mental health problems. Read more

Self-medication is when people use a substance to treat their own problems, rather than getting the help they really need. These problems are usually emotional or psychological. People who suffer from alcoholism and drug addictions are often self-medicating. The problem they’re trying unsuccessfully to fix or cover up could be depression, anxiety, inability to deal with a death or job loss, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, or a variety of other issues. Once in a while, people also try to self-medicate for physical problems. They could use alcohol to help them sleep, or use illegal or prescription drugs incorrectly to treat a recurring physical pain. Read more
