It can be very easy for a person to become addicted to any drug. It can even happen after a person uses a drug for the first time. This may not happen with every drug, but it is quite likely with some hardcore drugs like heroin and crystal meth.

While it is incredibly easy for a person to become a drug addict, it definitely isn’t so simple to treat the drug addiction. In fact, it can be quite problematic.

For one reason, many substance abusers deny that they have an addiction. They tell loved ones that they have everything under control or that they can quit whenever they want. Of course, this isn’t true, but if the addict is in denial, it can be nearly impossible for loved ones to get the addict into a drug rehabilitation program.

Or, even if the drug addict does realize that he has a problem, he may not think that he is ready or able to quit using his drug of choice. He may be afraid of what will happen if he quits, fearful of life without the drug and scared of what withdrawal will be like.

Finally, there are some drug abusers who admit that they have a problem and do want to try to enter a drug rehabilitation program. But, once they are there, they find that they are unable to stick with the program. Or, some even finish the program and then begin using their drugs again once they are back out of the program again.

A solution that works for some drug abusers is an intervention. An intervention is when an abuser’s loved ones gather together, possibly with some specialists from a drug rehabilitation center, and come up with a way to approach the abuser. Once a plan is formulated, the loved ones meet up with the drug abuser. They talk to him about how much they care for him and how they would love to see him back to the way he was before he began using his drug of choice. They try to open up a dialogue and get the addict talking to try to get him to understand how much his addiction is affecting all of his loved ones. Sometimes an intervention method is successful, because it gets the addict thinking about other people besides himself.

In order for an addict to be able to rid himself of his substance abuse, he will most likely need to go to a drug rehabilitation program.

Drug rehabilitation programs, or drug rehab, generally try to wean the addicts off of their drugs of choice through a variety of different methods. Most do not, however, use the “cold turkey” approach—this should be of some comfort to the addict entering drug rehab.
